Seen Without Having to Change

Message to self Listen first. Let people be who they are.

Note by Sanjeevan Premkumar ·

Toronto Raptors season opener and Kawhi plays for Toronto again. Seven years after the championship, he's back where it all came together.

Kawhi mentioned that when he first arrived, the city didn't ask him to change. It let him be who he was, and that's part of why the bond still holds.

Good friends do the same, and so do the early childhood educators we celebrate today. Even when we think we already know someone, the best thing we can say is "I don't understand. Can you please explain?" Saying "Ya, I know that already" closes the door, and a real question keeps it open.

It's easy to bring our own weight to every conversation. Sometimes the better gift is just to listen.

People who accept us as we are, and who we can be honest with, are a kind of wealth.
