This morning's reading from The Book of Awakening held an old idea from Chinese philosophy: when something breaks, something opens. I've always heard breaking as loss. Today it sounded more like a doorway.
Michael Beckwith names two ways we wake up. Kensho comes through inspiration, through ideas, and through quiet inner work done day after day. Satori comes through pain and challenge, when life cracks us open. Neither one is wrong. But the path we walk often depends on how much inner work we've already done.
So growth doesn't have to wait for suffering. Every morning we sit in silence, read, or write a few honest lines, we're opening gently, from the inside. When something does break, it finds us ready, and it opens instead of breaking us.
